At A-Lex Print & Promotion, we have many customers who do screen printed garments for their employees. Typically, when we get a call from a new customer, we try to educate them on the various factors that will affect the pricing and best fill their needs. When someone calls and says “I need to get shirts. How much will they cost?” There are many questions to be asked in order to give them an accurate quote.
What kind of garment will be silk screened?
If it is a silk screened t shirt, do you want a pocket? If it is a hoodie, do you want zip up or pullover? Do you want 100% cotton or a blend? We will typically get a customer a blank sample to check for sizing and comfort before we do the entire order.
What color is the garment?
Usually, the most inexpensive to print is a white shirt with dark colored printing on one side. If you are printing on two sides, an extra screen setup is required. Also, it is important to consider the color of the garment vs the desired color of the ink so a good contrast is achieved. I have seen light colored shirts with a light-colored ink and they do not stand out well.
What color is the ink and how many colors are needed?
Each color requires an additional screen setup. Also, light ink on dark shirts require that the shirts be flashed. This means that we would lay down the first hit of ink, run it under a small dryer and then hit it again with a second layer to make the printing pop to the eye. You may have seen black shirts with white ink that look dirty. This means that only one layer of ink was put down and the shirt color is showing through the ink. We have many standard ink colors but if a special non standard color is required, there is an additional charge to mix ink. After each shirt is printed, it is run though a dryer at 350 degrees to ensure that the ink is cured and will not break apart after a few washings.
